Winter in Vancouver

Having been born and raised in a country with constant summer, it is nothing out of ordinary to want to be in a place where it actually snows for real. I’ve wanted to see, touch and feel real snow (not man-made snow from Snow World or what-not) for so long and I was often envious of my friends who had the chance to go abroad, whether to study or for a vacation.

And as the story goes, I finally got the chance.

Never Let the Tea Spill

The damp wind was howling between the windowpanes. The periodic salvation it brings to the usually stuffy night ironies with my witnessing of Grandma’s demise on her bed. She was trying her best to convince the small audience around her that she was well. Yet, she was failing miserably, as the faces of my parents grow weary with the passing of every second. They knew the inevitable was to come.

It was then Grandma gestured from her sickbed for me. Breaking myself from my various thoughts, I obliged and leaned closer towards her. The overwhelming odour of medicine filled my nostrils.

“I’ve heard you’ve just got your driver’s license. Why don’t you take your Grandma out for a night?” Grandma said with a wink, “I don’t want just any girl to be your first date.”

Fine to be Me

People expect us to change in order to suit to their needs, and it always happens whether you realize it or not. To please a boss you need to be dedicated; to be mom’s apple of the eyes you need to be an angel; to be a good student you have to pass your exams with flying colors be well behaved (a gangster with good results doesn’t turn you into a hero :P); and the list goes on and on. Negative Remarks: Brushing it off

“Girls cannot do this.” “Boys cannot do that.” “Ai-ya, so girlish lah !” “Why the heck are you turning into a boy? Are you trans ah?” “Why you so sissy wan?” “Eh, you want to be female Christiano Ronaldo ah ?” “What a waste lah !” Yes, we’ve heard these remarks for many times, and I wonder how many people forgo their dreams and put their talents to waste just because of these comments.

I wrote the below two paragraphs in my Live space some time ago…

Ever felt you could never lose your friends?

In my life (and I’m sure in yours too), I’ve lost a number of friends. Some passed on, some just moved on, some moved away, while others lost touch. Thanks to the equilibrium of friendship though, in the course of losing friends, I’ve also been blessed with many other new ones. Some whom I’ve known before but never got the chance to know them better and some I just met.

I guess that’s what life is all about. You meet people, become friends, most of the time the flame of friendship burns out. Sometimes (although very rare) it lasts a lifetime.

Do you fear Fear?

“Never let fear bring you down but instead use it to strengthen your soul”

Based on a true story I heard when I was in my secondary school years, I used to be a “mangsa buli” - literally translated to “bully victim”. It was a fear to know that there was a whole gang who despises you based on your looks or if you are just not fit to be one of them.

A few signs that show you are a “mangsa buli”…

‘Hikikomori’: Are you guilty of societal isolation?

Have you ever felt like divorcing yourself from society?

‘The phenomenon of reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement due to various personal and social factors in their lives’ is how Wikipedia defines Hikikomori. The term originates from Japan, because there is a large population of such individuals there, mostly youths.

Truth Hurts

* Picture from http://pics.livejournal.com/schwarzkatze

Have you ever experienced having somebody, a friend, telling you that the brand new RM200 chic summer dress you are wearing makes you look fat? Maybe a colleague comes to you, stares at your newly tattoed eyebrow that costs you RM300 and said “Oh my you look like you had it done in the dark.”

Nothing happened. We just grew up.

There is no bliss like those of the little ones.

Why can’t we always have what we want in life?

I think it’s a known fact that we can’t and won’t always get what we want. Almost every normal person has gone through a situation where what you want and what you get are 2 whole different things. Emotions vary from disappointment to devastation when this happens.

It’s really not that bad after all. Easier said than done, yes, but how bad could it possibly be?
